Godtear

Miniature Game - Design and Lead Development

Godtear is a tabletop miniatures game that sees champions collect the tears of the gods to ascend to godhood. Godtear uses a unique tug of war scoring system called the battle ladder as well as featuring an unusual mixture of alternating and non-alternating (I Go, You Go) activations.

Unlike a lot of other miniature games, Godtear allows players to play with any combination of champions from four different classes; slayer, maelstrom, shaper, and guardian. Each with their own playstyle, mechanical identity, and unique way of scoring points on the battle ladder.

Responsibilities

Whilst working on Godtear, I was its development lead and designer had the following responsibilities:

  • Maintained and ran both internal and external playtesting throughout the multi-year life span of the game.
  • Worked in collaboration with other designers Alex Hall and David 'DC' Carl before taking up full ownership of the game's design and development.
  • Created and maintained organised play documents for tournament play as well as designing and developing two different progression focused narrative campaigns.
  • Worked on all 27 unique champions released for the game, ensuring each was appealing to the Godtear community with a fun and unique mechanical identity. This was done whilst ensuring that each class maintained its own identity and playstyle.
  • Created art briefs and graphics briefs to communicate visual design to our internal concept artist, graphics design team, and sculptors.
  • Ran and attended events as part of the community management as well as being active in fan communication spaces like Discord. Appeared on livestreams and podcasts to help promote the game. Additionally outside of work, I ran one of the first ever Godtear campaign events in the world!
  • Wrote gameplay and design blogs for each champion as part of marketing material and promotion for each new release.
  • Created and maintained FAQ/Errata documents ensuring that rules questions were answered and subsequently compiled in a downloadable rules document.
  • Created internal documentation and style guides for rules text to provide guidelines for further design and development.
